Greece in the winter, Greece with its thousand faces and its countless images, part 5 Mountain Pelion or Pilio
Twenty suggestions for where to go to get in touch with nature, culture, tradition and the quality of life, on the traveling scene.
INTRODUCTION, PART 5
Holiday time is a reprieve from the drudgery of our everyday routine and a time to dream dreams both small and large that conjure up visions of opportunities to get away...
We passively watch travel documentaries and travel advertisements on television until the time comes for us to take action on our wishes for contact, learning about our country and, why not, for plans for present and future pursuits.
Optimistic acts are better than pessimistic thoughts, and for this reason you should have the temerity to take your winter escape in the icy county of Evro where you will be baptized into the ecological world of harrier eagles and flamingos.
Two day trips that you take for your children to enjoy can end up as outings with friends and loved ones to places like Mani, Arcadia, Evia or the forts of Messinia.
There are, of course, some conventional suggestions for trips to Ipeiros, Agrafa and Evretania, while a day trip of cutting through the ravines of the Bouriekou approach being the ultimate golden cut for many.
Finally, there is the extreme idea, where the Libyan Sea embraces the plethoric and unique island of Crete.
A unique, adventurous trip that may lead to discovery, and the completeness that can be offered to whoever wants to enjoy unending hours of walking in the sweet winter weather of Greece, is surely a good ending.
PART 5
MOUNTAIN PELION OR PILIO CLOSE TO THE KENTAURS
A stone throw away from Volos the mountain of the Centaur s waits you at Pilio. Up high on the mountain the snow glistens on the branches of the wild firtrees for many months out of the year. Below, of course, we find Upper Volos, Portaria and Makrinitsa. The road snakes upward toward Pilio and it is full of sharp turns.
Makrinitsa is a town that is the unique balcony of the Lapitho and Magnito Mountains. These mountains are named after the first mythical tribes that supposedly resided in the area. It is a place where rose bushes are so abundant they seem to choke the area and wild woodbine cover the cobbled lanes.
To the south of Pilio the famous Mileo museum and the last railway station of the romantic Moutzouri calls you once again. A little further on is the famous Bizitsa mansion with its stained glass dormer windows. On the northern side, Kamara welcomes us and the seaport of Kramido with its rock islets is like a heavenly paradise where many years before our ancestors lived a life that many of us today would think of as a chimera.
Karamidi is on the border of Magnisia and naturally has the distinct style of Pilio. Remember that from Keramidi the national footpath for hikers, 02, runs from Elafo toward Veneto.
The doll like town of Ntamouhari, then the spacious beauty of St. John and the unique town of Horevto end this sample of the Pilio area.
