Kefalonia, an island with a long history

Kefalonia, an island with a long history

Kefalonia has been inhabited in an organized manner since the 10th century B.C. According to the historian Thoukidides, as early as the 5th century B.C. it was divided into four distinct and autonomous states that comprised the "Kefalonian Tetrapolis" (Sami, Krani, Palli, and Pronnoi). The names of the four city-states, according to myth, were derived from the names of mythical Kefalos four sons. Significant findings from archeological excavations in the area prove that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times and that it was an important Mycenaean Center. Excavations to date point to Kefalonia as the undisputable center of the Mycenaean Era in the western island region of Greece. This reasonably associates the island with the ongoing archeological research for the geographical location of Homeric Ithaca. Findings at the Drakena Cave in Poros prove human existence at least 6000 years B.C. and use of the cave as a place of worship. The most significant archeological find however is located at Bortzi near Tzanata village. It is a vaulted tomb of the Mycenaean Era that was excavated by archeologist L. Kolonas in 1992. The tomb has a diameter of 6,80 m. and is the largest and best preserved such tomb in western Greece. The excavation finds include seals, pottery, golden jewelry and copper tools. The discovery of the tomb proves the existence of a significant Mycenaean Center and strengthens the argument that this was the location of Homeric Ithaca. Other significant sites of archeological interest include the Temple of Apollo or Poseidon on the location of St. Georges chapel in Skala dated to the 6th century B.C., and the Roman Villa in Skala with its fabulous mosaic floors. Like the rest of the island, southeastern Kefalonia came to know many conquerors in the course of its history: Romans, Francs, Venetians, Russians, Turks, French, and the British - until 1864 when Kefalonia along with the other Ionian Islands was reunited with Greece.

Alexandroupolis - A Hospitable City

Alexandroupolis - A Hospitable City

Alexandroupolis is one of the newest Greek cities. It was founded by the Turks in 1876 as a trading post (despite the fact that it did not have a port) for loading goods on ships destined for Adrianoupolis, which was connected by railway. It took the name Dedeagats, by the name of a Turkish monk who had been buried at that point. Russians engineers drew up the street plan in 1877, when the region was occupied by Russia, in the Russian-Turkish war. The Town, who had collected many Greek residents, came to Greece with the rest of Thrace, of ordering the Treaty of Sevres. Immediately, it took its current name in honor of the then King Alexander, who had visited it when it was just released. The ruins of ancient Traianoupolis are just ten minutes from the eastern exit of town. From the substantial administrative, civil and ecclesiastical center of Thrace, founded by Emperor Traianos in the second century BC, have left few buildings. The municipal park, the picturesque church of St. Eleftherios, the neoclassical building of the Pedagogical Academy and some old houses with typical architecture of the century make up the image of this city. In the old town hall is housed an archaeological collection. The Ecclesiastical Art Museum housed in the spiritual center of the metropolis. The folklore collection E. Philippidou will show weavings, embroidery, sarakatsani uniforms, etc. In the taverns of Alexandroupolis to eat fresh fish and abundant seafood. In Klimataria, in Koutouki of Stavros, in Metaxas, in Mermaid, and elsewhere. The town has a lively nightlife in bars and nightclubs. For swimming you can go to the beach of EOT (Greek Tourism Organization) and to the beaches until Makri. If you have a boat, in the port of Alexandroupolis, there is astation only for water. The supply of fuel is made from petrol stations.

The island is also known since ancient times with the name Koulouris, from the Cape "Kolouris akra" (now Punta), in which was built the ancient city and the port of the 4th century BC.
